Other ways smart homes save energy
This calculator covers the three biggest wins, but smart home energy savings go further. A few
areas worth exploring as you expand your setup:
- Occupancy-based HVAC zoning. Smart vents and room sensors let you heat or
cool only the rooms in use, reducing waste in empty rooms.
- Smart blinds and curtains. Automated window coverings can block heat gain
in summer and retain warmth in winter, cutting HVAC load by an additional 3 – 10%.
- Hot water scheduling. Smart water heater controllers let you heat water
only during off-peak hours or when you actually need it.
- Peak and off-peak rate optimization. If your utility offers time-of-use
pricing, smart plugs and schedules can shift high-draw appliances to cheaper hours.
