Costs this calculator does not include

The estimate above covers device hardware only. Real-world budgets often include a few extra line items that are easy to overlook.

  • Installation labor. Smart switches and thermostats sometimes need an electrician, especially in older homes without a neutral wire. Budget roughly $50 – $150 per device for professional installation.
  • Cloud subscriptions. Some cameras and doorbells need a monthly plan for video history (Ring Protect, Nest Aware, Arlo Secure, etc.). Expect $3 – $15 per month per device, or a household plan.
  • WiFi and mesh upgrades. Adding dozens of smart devices to a basic router can cause slowdowns. A mesh WiFi kit runs $150 – $400 and is worth factoring in if you are planning more than one room.
  • Hubs, bridges, and protocol adapters. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices need a hub. Matter and Thread devices may work directly, but check your setup first. See the compatibility matrix for details.

Tips before you buy

  • Start with one or two rooms, then add devices in phases.
  • Budget for WiFi upgrades and any wiring changes that show up later.
  • Use this range as a guide, then lock in a real quote once you pick brands.
