Smart Home Subscription Calculator | True Cost of Cloud Plans

By Marlo Strydom

See what the cloud really costs you

Smart cameras, doorbells, and locks are often advertised by their sticker price, but the monthly cloud plan is where the real money goes. This calculator adds up those recurring fees across your whole setup and shows the monthly, annual, and 5-year total. Adjust the counts and prices to match the brands you own.

How do you pay?

Why these plans add up

A single camera at $3 – $5 a month looks trivial, but most homes end up with several cameras, a doorbell, and a lock — each pulling its own plan. The table below shows how quickly the recurring fees stack for a typical setup.

  • Per-device plans multiply fast. Three Ring cameras on Protect Basic is about $15 a month before you add a doorbell.
  • Per-home plans can save money once you have several devices, because one subscription covers the whole household.
  • Yearly billing usually wins. Most brands discount the annual price by roughly a month or two. The toggle above shows the difference.

Tips to cut subscription costs

  • Use local storage. An NVR, a microSD card in the camera, or a hub with built-in storage can replace cloud history entirely. Some cameras work with a NAS or self-hosted software like Frigate or Scrypted.
  • HomeKit Secure Video with iCloud+. If you are in the Apple ecosystem, a single iCloud+ tier can cover multiple cameras with on-device detection and no per-camera fee.
  • Pick the per-home tier when you have several devices. Bundles like Ring Protect Pro or Arlo Secure multi become cheaper per device once you cross two or three cameras.
  • Switch to yearly billing. Where a plan offers an annual price, paying yearly typically saves 10 – 20%.
  • Audit before you renew. Cancel cloud plans on cameras you no longer actively monitor — see how to monitor security cameras remotely to decide which ones earn their keep.

What this calculator does not include

  • One-time hardware. Camera, doorbell, and lock purchase prices. Use the Cost Estimator for those.
  • Internet service. Your broadband bill is shared across the whole household, not just smart home devices.
  • Electricity. Device standby power is small but non-zero. See the Energy Savings Calculator for that angle.
  • Taxes and regional pricing. Prices are user-editable defaults in USD; adjust them to your local rates and currency.
