Platform notes
Not every trigger works the same way on every platform. Keep these differences in mind when building your routine.
- Time of day — supported on all major platforms (Alexa, Google Home, HomeKit, SmartThings). The most reliable trigger type.
- Sunrise and sunset — Alexa Routines, Google Home, and HomeKit all support this, but offset options vary. HomeKit offers the most granular control.
- Motion detection — depends on the sensor brand and hub. Alexa works with Ring and Echo motion sensors. Google Home supports Nest sensors. HomeKit uses any HomeKit-compatible motion sensor.
- Door and window events — requires a compatible contact sensor. SmartThings and HomeKit have the widest sensor support. Alexa supports select brands natively.
- Arrival and departure — uses phone location or presence sensors. Accuracy varies. HomeKit and SmartThings tend to be more reliable than Alexa for geofencing.
